Winner: 2021 5-Year Cost to Own AwardWinner: 2021 Best Resale Value Award#5 in Best Compact SUVs for 2021

Get into a 2021 Subaru Forester and take it for a drive. It will quickly become apparent why the Forester has been one of Subaru’s most popular SUVs year after year.

While retaining a relatively small footprint (an especially welcome attribute when driving around town), the Forester still offers useful interior space. Out in the wild, dirt roads and rough weather cause no consternation for the Forester driver, thanks to its 8.7 inches of ground clearance and permanent all-wheel drive.

High safety scores are yet another plus point. The Forester earned a maximum 5-star overall score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Forester enjoys generous amounts of standard equipment for prices that stack up well against rivals like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape and Kia Sportage. This year sees even more standard features such as adaptive LED headlights. And blind-spot monitoring, which was optional in Sport trim, is now included.

Resale values are also robust. The Forester won our 2020 Best Resale Award and Lowest 5-Year Cost to Own award for the compact crossover class.

Pros

  • Roomy for a compact-crossover SUV
  • All-wheel drive is standard
  • Plenty of safety features as standard
  • Can achieve 33 mpg on the highway
  • Tough construction

Cons

  • The only transmission is a continuously variable automatic (CVT)
  • CVTs tend to blunt engine responses
  • Styling is somewhat rustic
  • Maximum towing capacity is only 1,500 pounds
