As the 3 Series lineup grew larger and more expensive, BMW needed a new entry-level model for its U.S. customers. So, the company turned to its European lineup and plucked the tiny 1 Series coupe and convertible for service in America, beginning with the 2008 model year. Though small, the 1 Series retained the enjoyable driving dynamics for which BMW is known. Available with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the 1 Series offered a choice between a four-cylinder and a six-cylinder engine and manual, automatic, and dual-clutch automatic transmissions in various combinations. In addition, a twin-turbocharged 1 Series M Coupe magnified the driving thrills. The 1 Series run in America was short-lived, however BMW replaced it with the 2 Series for the 2014 model year.
